Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How tall and how old are you?
A: I am 5’6” and 17 years of age!
Q: What are your eating habits and exercise routine like?
A: My diet consists of mostly fresh, unprocessed foods. I eat a mostly plant based diet and egg whites, chicken, and fish are my main protein sources. My first choice for snacks are always fruit or nuts. I eat oatmeal like it’s candy. I also drink protein shakes and try to add protein powder to any baked goods I might make. I do not eat refined carbs (White bread, white rice, pasta) or drink soda.
I exercise five times a week for 45 minutes a session. 20 minutes are devoted to any type of cardio exercise and the last 25 minutes are devoted to intense weight training. I prefer not using weight machines and using free weights, barbells, and etc.
Q: I’ve started to eat healthy and exercise and I weighed myself yesterday and was x lbs. I weighed myself today and now I’m >x lbs. How could I have gained back lbs?
A: There are a lot of factors that can affect the numbers you see on the scale. You have to take into consideration that the human body naturally fluctuates on average 2 lbs a day. Also think about if you could be retaining water from dehydration or your menstrual cycle, and when was the last time you made a bowel movement. If you have just started introducing exercise into your lifestyle, it is also quite possible that you have gained muscle mass.
Q: I’ve started to lose weight, but it’s been very sporadic and inconsistent. When will my weight loss become consistent?
A: Weight loss is not linear! You will always have good weeks and bad weeks. It’s not because you “messed up”, it’s because the body does what it wants and sometimes that means only dropping 0.5 lbs one week.
Q: I have a hard time staying motivated; What do you do to keep your motivation up?
A: I always think about how much better I will feel after my work out or after eating a healthy meal. I think about how much better I will feel without extra weight on me. I think about how I will never have to suffer the obesity related health problems that the majority of my family suffers from. I think about how I need to be a good example for my siblings, my peers, and my followers.
Q: What would you recommend for calorie tracking?
A: I used Caloriecount.About.com when I counted calories, and I personally think it is one of the best tools on the internet.
Q: Can I lose x amount of weight in x amount of time?
A: Healthy weight loss is probably between one to two pounds a week, on average. If you make a commitment to eating well and exercising regularly, you will get results.
Q: I’ve hit a plateau, what can I do to break it?
A: First, assess that you are meeting your caloric and nutrition needs on a daily basis. If not, adjust your diet and see if that jump starts your weight loss. Secondly, switch up your work outs. Start interval training on the treadmill instead of resistance training on the elliptical or start lifting heavier weights. Third, plan an appointment with your doctor or nutritionist; They will be able to help you based on your individual needs.
